FASSET Learnership Programmes 2026: 6 Career Designations

The Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority (FASSET) has launched its 2026 recruitment drive for six specialized career designations. These learnerships are designed to bridge the skills gap in South Africa's financial sector, offering a mix of theoretical study and practical workplace experience.

2. The 6 Career Designations (Streams)

FASSET-funded learnerships typically lead to professional memberships. The 2026 intake focuses on:

  1. Accounting Technician (AAT): For those wanting to work in general accounting and bookkeeping.

  2. Tax Technician: Specialized training in VAT, Income Tax, and SARS compliance.

  3. Internal Audit Technician: Focused on risk management and internal controls within organizations.

  4. Payroll Administrator: Training in payroll software, UIF, PAYE, and BCEA compliance.

  5. Debt Collector: Professionalizing the recovery of outstanding accounts and credit management.

  6. Public Sector Accountant: Specifically for those aiming to work in municipal or provincial government finance departments.

3. Minimum Requirements

Requirements depend on whether you are a Matriculant or a TVET Graduate:

  • For Matriculants: Grade 12 with a pass in Mathematics (not Math Literacy for most streams) and Accounting.

  • For TVET Graduates (WBE): Must have completed N6 Theory in Financial Management or Business Management and require 18 months of "Work-Based Experience" to graduate.

  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen with a valid ID.

  • Age: Must be between 18 and 35 years old.

  • Status: Must be currently unemployed and not registered for other full-time studies.

4. How to Apply

FASSET rarely recruits directly; they fund Accredited Providers and Employers who then hire the learners.

  3. Required Documents: * Certified copy of your ID.

    • Certified copy of your Matric Certificate.

    • Full Academic Record (Transcripts).

    • N6 Completion Letter (only for TVET WBE applicants).

  4. Submission: Apply directly to the accredited training providers (like AAT(SA), ICB, or specific accounting firms) listed on the FASSET website.

5. Important Advice for 2026

  • The Math Requirement: Finance is numerical. If you have a high mark in Mathematics, highlight it on the first page of your CV.

  • Learnership vs. WBE: Do not confuse these. A Learnership gives you a new qualification; WBE is for TVET students who already have the theory and just need the hours to get their Diploma.

  • Professional Bodies: Many of these roles lead to membership in bodies like AAT(SA) or the SA Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT). Mentioning your desire to become a "Professional Member" shows you are serious about a career, not just a stipend.

  • Excel Skills: Almost all finance work happens in spreadsheets. If you have a basic computer certificate or self-taught Excel skills, include them.

6. Why Choose a FASSET Learnership?

  • Marketable Skills: Finance is one of South Africa's "Scarce Skills" sectors. You are almost guaranteed employment if you perform well.

  • Stipend Support: Unlike university, you are paid to learn. The stipend is designed to cover your transport and basic costs.

  • Network: You will be placed in real firms, allowing you to build a professional network before you even qualify.

Tip: When applying, use a "Professional" email address (e.g., yourname.surname@email.com). In the finance sector, your presentation and attention to detail start with how you name your files and how you write your introductory email.
