5. Important Advice for 2026

  • The Medical "Hurts": Transnet is strict on health. If you have poor eyesight (specifically color blindness) or chronic back issues, this role may not be suitable due to the safety risks involved.

  • Psychometric Testing: Shortlisted candidates will undergo a "Dover Test" or similar psychometric assessment to measure hand-eye coordination, concentration levels, and reaction times.

  • Shift Work & Travel: Being a Train Assistant is not a 9-to-5 job. You will work irregular shifts, including nights and weekends, and may spend nights away from home at "rest rooms" in other towns.

  • Safety Culture: In your interview, focus heavily on your commitment to safety. Use phrases like "Strict adherence to SOPs" (Standard Operating Procedures) and "Zero-harm mindset."

6. Why Join Transnet?

  • Career Progression: This is the only path to becoming a Train Driver. Transnet invests heavily in your training, moving you from Trainee to Assistant and eventually to Driver.

  • Specialized Skills: You will receive accredited training on locomotive systems, air brake systems, and railway safety legislation.

  • Benefits: As a parastatal (SOC) employee, you receive a competitive salary, housing allowance, medical aid, and a highly stable pension fund.

Tip: If you have any previous experience in technical environments (like an apprentice mechanic or electrician) or have worked in logistics/warehousing, mention it! It shows you are comfortable working around heavy machinery and understand industrial safety.
