5. Important Advice for 2026

  • The "Maths" Threshold: The department is very strict about the level of Mathematics achieved. If your marks are below the 40% (Maths) or 50% (Maths Lit) threshold, your application will be automatically disqualified by the system.

  • Metro vs. Rural: When applying, ensure you select the correct region. "Metro" covers the Cape Town area, while "Rural" includes districts like West Coast, Overberg, Garden Route, Central Karoo, and Cape Winelands.

  • Commitment: This is a rigorous academic programme. You will be expected to study after hours to pass your SAPC exams while working full-time in a busy clinic or hospital pharmacy.

  • SAPC Registration: If you have previously been registered as a Learner Pharmacist Assistant with the Pharmacy Council, you must disclose this, as it may affect your eligibility for a funded learnership.

6. Why Join Western Cape Health?

  • Professional Pathway: Completing the Basic level allows you to progress to the Post-Basic level, which eventually leads to a permanent, skilled career in pharmacy.

  • Service to Community: You will be playing a vital role in the public healthcare system, ensuring patients receive their life-saving chronic medications.

  • Stipend: Learners receive a monthly allowance while they study, covering basic costs.

Tip: In your application, emphasize your attention to detail and accuracy. In pharmacy, even a small mistake in counting or reading a label is a safety risk. Mentioning your commitment to "Zero Error" and "Patient Safety" will impress the recruitment panel.
