Sebokeng Hospital: Auxiliary Worker (CSSD) 2026

The Gauteng Department of Health is recruiting an Auxiliary Worker for the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) at Sebokeng Hospital. This is a critical support role responsible for ensuring that all medical instruments and equipment are decontaminated and sterilized to prevent infections during surgery and patient care.

1. Quick Overview

PositionAuxiliary Worker (CSSD)
Reference No.SEB/CSSD/05/2026
SalaryR131,265 per annum (plus benefits)
Closing Date22 May 2026

2. Minimum Requirements

This entry-level post prioritizes hygiene awareness and physical reliability:

  • Education: A minimum of Grade 10 or equivalent. A Grade 12 (Matric) is an advantage.

  • Experience: Previous experience in a hospital environment, specifically in a CSSD or cleaning department, is highly preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Basic understanding of infection control and sterilization processes.

    • Ability to operate basic cleaning and sterilization machinery.

    • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

  • Attributes: Willingness to work rotating shifts (day and night), weekends, and public holidays.

3. Key Responsibilities

The CSSD is the "heart" of hospital hygiene. Your duties will include:

  • Decontamination: Cleaning and disinfecting soiled medical instruments coming from theaters and wards.

  • Packaging: Inspecting instruments for damage or rust and correctly wrapping/packing them into specialized sterilization sets.

  • Sterilization: Loading and operating autoclaves and other sterilization equipment.

  • Storage & Distribution: Storing sterile packs in a "cleanroom" environment and ensuring they are delivered to the correct departments on time.

  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate logs of sterilized items and machinery performance tests (e.g., Bowie-Dick tests).

  • Safety: Adhering to strict Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.

4. How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the Gauteng Provincial Government's formal channels.

  1. Z83 Form: Must be the New Z83 Form (2021). Ensure it is fully completed, signed, and quotes the correct reference: SEB/CSSD/05/2026.

  2. Online Submission: It is highly recommended to apply via the GPG Professional Job Centre.

  3. Hand Delivery: Applications can be delivered to Sebokeng Hospital, Moshoeshoe Street, Sebokeng (HR Department).

  4. Required Documents: A Comprehensive CV and the Z83. You do not need to attach certified copies of qualifications unless you are shortlisted.

5. Important Advice for 2026

  • The "Technical" Link: Since you are an Engineering student, highlight your familiarity with machinery and pressurized systems. An autoclave is essentially a high-pressure steam vessel. Mentioning that you understand thermodynamics or pressure control (even at a basic level) will show you are more than capable of operating sterilization equipment safely.

  • Infection Control: In your application, emphasize your discipline. CSSD work requires zero errors—missing a single spot on a surgical tool can be life-threatening. Relate this to the precision required in your electrical engineering projects.

  • Shift Readiness: Mention specifically that you are available for 24/7 rotation. Hospitals often filter out candidates who seem hesitant about night shifts.

  • Location: Sebokeng is in the Vaal area (South of Johannesburg). If you are currently in Limpopo, ensure you have a plan for relocation if called for an interview.

6. Why Join Sebokeng Hospital?

  • Public Service Benefits: Access to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), medical aid (GEMS), and a housing allowance.

  • Skill Development: CSSD is a specialized field. Working here provides a strong foundation if you ever want to move into Clinical Engineering (maintenance of medical equipment), which aligns perfectly with your studies.

  • Community Service: You will be playing a direct role in the safety and recovery of patients in the Sedibeng district.

Tip: Your background in Clinical Engineering (designing ventilators) makes you an overqualified but highly desirable candidate for this. Use your motivation letter to explain how your technical studies give you a "safety-first" mindset when handling medical devices!
