2. Role Purpose
The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional fire-fighting services, rescue operations, and hazardous material (Hazmat) response within the Port of East London. You will work within a team to ensure the safety of the maritime environment and land-based port facilities.
3. Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role in 2026, you must meet the following:
Education: Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
Professional Qualifications: * Fire Fighter 1 (NFPA 1001 accredited).
Hazmat Awareness (NFPA 472 accredited).
Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid Level 3.
Licensing: Valid Code C1 (Code 10) Driver’s License with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit and able to pass a rigorous physical capability test (no fear of heights or confined spaces).
Experience: 6 to 12 months of experience in an emergency services environment is an advantage.
Health: Must pass a medical surveillance examination (including lung function and eyesight tests).
4. Key Responsibilities
Fire Suppression: Responding to fire calls and extinguishing fires on ships, buildings, and vegetation within the port.
Search & Rescue: Conducting rescue operations in various scenarios (high-angle, confined space, or vehicle accidents).
Equipment Maintenance: Daily inspections and cleaning of fire engines, pumps, and specialized rescue gear.
Safety Drills: Participating in regular simulated emergency exercises to maintain high readiness levels.
Fire Prevention: Conducting fire safety inspections and monitoring "hot work" (welding/cutting) permits within the port.
