Minimum Requirements
To enter the support and maintenance structures of the department, candidates must meet the following baseline entry criteria:
A completed Grade 9 certificate, ABET Level 4, or an equivalent basic education qualification from a recognized school or adult education center.
Unemployed South African citizens, with preference often given to youth between the ages of 18 and 35 residing within the local municipality.
Basic literacy and communication skills (ability to read equipment safety indicators, understand chemical storage rules, and follow verbal instructions).
High physical fitness, stamina, and manual dexterity to execute manual labor, manage extended standing periods, and handle industrial hand tools or landscaping machinery.
Strong personal discipline, reliability, and a clean background record.
Key Responsibilities & Learning Exposure
General Workers ensure the structural maintenance, cleanliness, and operational readiness of regional offices and community facilities:
Performing routine groundskeeping duties, including mowing lawns, trimming hedges, clearing overgrown brush, and maintaining clean outdoor premises.
Executing basic building maintenance tasks, cleaning office surroundings, sweeping walkways, and washing external structures safely.
Emptying waste disposal units, handling refuse collection, and sorting waste into designated disposal containment areas.
Assisting with internal logistics, including moving heavy office furniture, setting up meeting venues, and packing regional delivery or storage bays.
Loading and unloading regional operational supplies, tools, and materials from department utility vehicles.
Operating all assigned tools and maintenance equipment safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act guidelines.
