ABOUT THE COMPANY – SASMT

South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) was formed in 1918 by a group of music teachers in Cape Town. Almost a century later, SASMT is the oldest professional music society across Southern Africa.


SASMT represents music teachers in Schools, Private practice, Music centres, Colleges and Universities and has done so since its inception.

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMMES – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

1. David Reunert Bursary: This bursary award value is R1,500. The bursary will be awarded to music students who intend on teaching or performing music professionally.
2. Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship: This bursary award value is R5,000. The bursary will be awarded to those studying stringed instruments (the violin in particular).
3. Gladwell Scholarship: This bursary award value is R12,000 – to be paid in 2 installments to the institution/ person. The bursary will be awarded to music students who intend on studying music – instrumental, composition or vocal.
4. Kathleen Irish Scholarship: This bursary award value is R12,000 – to be paid in 2 installments to the institution/ person. The bursary will be awarded to talented music students, who intend on studying piano at tertiary level and are financially disadvantaged.

The winners of the bursary awards will be required to perform at the next SASMT Annual General Meeting.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
1. David Reunert Bursary:

  • South African citizen
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 25
  • Must have a Matric certificate or equivalent
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Intend on teaching or performing music professionally (singing/ performing/ teaching/ theoretical branch of music)

2. Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship

  • South African citizen
  • Must have a Matric certificate or equivalent
  • May study locally or internationally
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Studying stringed instruments (the violin in particular)

3. Gladwell Scholarship

  • South African citizen
  • Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
  • Minimum grade 8 standard of music examining bodies
  • Under 25 years of age
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Intend on studying music (instrumental, composition or vocal)

4. Kathleen Irish Scholarship:

  • Intends to study music locally or internationally, at an institution or teacher approved by the SASMT Council
  • Student of current and paid-up members of the SASMT
  • Proven financial need
  • Intend on studying piano at tertiary level


HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARIES

Download and complete the SASMT Bursaries Application Form (pdf). (This one application form is applicable for all bursary programmes).

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Full academic record to date
  • Matric certificate (or equivalent)
  • Shortened Curriculum Vitae
  • Minimum of 2 referee recommendations (1 must be the head from the institution or department head of where you currently study)
  • Recent unedited DVD recording OR a Youtube video (Must contain at least 3 contrasting works from a minimum of 2 style periods, totaling 15 to 20 minutes. Each piece must be on a separate track. Your name, as well as the name and instrument must be stated on the DVD – NOT recorded.)
  • Teachers declaration that the DVD is of the applicants personal performance
  • Electronic photo (approx. 500 px height)
