Minimum Requirements
To step into the mechanical workshop division at RCL Foods, candidates must meet the following baseline criteria:
A completed Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or N3/NCV Level 4 equivalent in a mechanical/technical field.
Advantageous: A formal technical qualification or basic trade theory exposure (Diesel Mechanic, Motor Mechanic, or Fitter & Turner tracks).
Little to no formal experience required, though prior experience working as a workshop general worker, grease-monkey, or handy assistant is highly beneficial.
Clear mechanical aptitude, spatial awareness, and a high level of comfort working with heavy industrial hand tools and machinery.
Basic communication and literacy skills in English (ability to read equipment safety manuals and log basic maintenance tracking entries).
High physical fitness, stamina, and manual dexterity to handle heavy lifting, climbing, and extended periods of practical workshop labor.
Strict commitment to corporate safety rules, workshop hygiene, and risk management parameters.
Key Responsibilities & Learning Exposure
Working under the direct supervision of qualified Trade Artisans and Diesel Mechanics, the assistant gains valuable hands-on experience:
Assisting with routine preventative maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, and major overhaul repairs on company fleet vehicles, delivery trucks, or agricultural equipment.
Cleaning, degreasing, preparing, and systematically stripping down engine blocks, gearboxes, and suspension components for inspection.
Fetching, organizing, and maintaining specialized workshop tools, hydraulic jacks, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
Managing workshop neatness—sweeping workspace bays, clearing hazardous oil spills, and sorting waste metals into correct disposal streams.
Packing and organizing incoming mechanical spare parts, monitoring consumable workshop inventory arrays, and reporting shortages.
Adhering strictly to standard operating procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act to prevent workshop accidents.
